The Difference Between a Pinterest VA, a Pinterest Manager, and a Pinterest Strategist

By: Missy Lund

If you’ve ever searched for Pinterest help, you’ve probably come across a few different titles: Pinterest Virtual Assistant (VA), Pinterest Manager, or possibly Pinterest Strategist.

These are some of the most commonly used titles, even though there are other variations you may come across.

At first glance, they might sound interchangeable but they actually represent different levels of experience, scope of work, and strategy.

I began as a Pinterest VA in 2020, subcontracting for agencies and other Pinterest Managers. Over time, I took on my own clients, transitioned into Pinterest Management, and now—with years of hands-on experience—I work as a Pinterest Strategist, though I typically refer to myself as a Pinterest Marketing Specialist.

Even though I’ve long been familiar with these titles, it wasn’t until I navigated a real client mismatch that I realized how important it is to clearly define the differences between them.

That experience showed up when a client reached out believing they needed a Pinterest Manager. While the client thought they needed a Pinterest Manager, they actually needed a Pinterest VA, and they weren’t looking for strategy or direction, just someone to follow their instructions exactly.

Our working relationship ended quickly because it wasn’t the right fit, and that experience is what motivated me to write this post.

Clear expectations matter, as understanding these roles is important for both the Pinterest service provider and the client.

If you’re offering Pinterest services yourself, this breakdown can help you recognize where you fit right now and where you may want to grow as you gain more experience.

Whether you’re outsourcing Pinterest for the first time or offering Pinterest services yourself, knowing the differences can make all the difference.

Who This Post Is For

This post is for:

  • Business owners trying to decide whether they need a Pinterest VA, Manager, or Strategist
  • Pinterest service providers who want clarity around role expectations and responsibilities
  • Freelancers exploring Pinterest services and wondering where they fit or how they might grow

Whether you’re hiring for Pinterest support or offering it yourself, this breakdown is designed to help set clear expectations on both sides.

Pinterest Virtual Assistant (VA): The Foundation of Pinterest Support

A Pinterest VA is often the first step in outsourcing Pinterest tasks. They’re typically focused on implementation rather than strategy.

Think of them as your hands-on support for the day-to-day operations.

Common tasks a Pinterest VA handles:

  • Designing and uploading fresh pins
  • Writing keyword-rich titles and descriptions
  • Scheduling pins to boards using Tailwind, Pinterest’s native scheduler, or another third-party scheduling tool
  • Repurposing blog or product content into Pinterest-friendly formats
  • Light keyword research and applying approved keywords to pin titles, descriptions, and boards

A Pinterest VA is a great fit if you already have a strategy in place but need someone to execute it consistently.

They help you save time and stay visible, even if you’re not ready for a full management package.

Many Pinterest VAs also work behind the scenes for Pinterest agencies or other Pinterest Managers, helping them scale their services, handle more client work, or manage recurring tasks efficiently.

This makes the Pinterest VA role an excellent entry point for freelancers looking to gain experience, refine their skills, and grow into a Pinterest Manager or Strategist role over time.

Pinterest Manager: The Bridge Between Execution and Strategy

A Pinterest Manager takes things a step further. They don’t just pin content; they manage your entire Pinterest presence from planning to execution to performance tracking.

Pinterest Managers blend creative, technical, and analytical skills. They focus on growth, optimization, and data-driven results.

While the Pinterest Manager’s responsibilities often include the same hands-on tasks as a Pinterest VA, the key difference lies in independence and ownership.

A Pinterest Manager typically works more autonomously.

They develop and refine strategy, make data-driven decisions, and provide regular updates or performance reports to the client.

Although not always the case, it’s common for a Pinterest VA to take direction from their client or a Pinterest Manager, while a Pinterest Manager takes initiative, offers guidance, and ensures the overall Pinterest strategy aligns with the brand’s larger marketing goals.

Additionally, Pinterest Managers handle:

  • Monthly content planning aligned with your business goals
  • Designing and uploading fresh pins
  • Writing keyword-rich titles and descriptions
  • Scheduling pins to boards using Tailwind, Pinterest’s native scheduler, or another third-party scheduling tool
  • Pin and board SEO optimization
  • Analytics tracking and reporting (impressions, clicks, saves, CTR)
  • Maintaining brand consistency in pin designs
  • Adjusting strategy based on performance trends

This role is ideal for business owners who want consistent traffic and conversions from Pinterest without having to manage the platform themselves.

Pinterest Strategist: The Big-Picture Planner

A Pinterest Strategist is the visionary. They create the roadmap that drives your Pinterest presence toward measurable business outcomes.

While a VA and Manager focus on execution and management, a Strategist focuses on direction.

In some cases, a Pinterest Strategist may also take on Pinterest Manager responsibilities—particularly in smaller teams or when strategy and execution are closely connected.

This can look like overseeing implementation or stepping in to ensure the strategy is being carried out correctly, but it’s not always part of the role.

They dive deep into audience behavior, analytics, SEO research, and content performance to shape a comprehensive Pinterest strategy.

Pinterest Strategists focus on:

  • Pinterest audits and account optimization plans
  • Keyword mapping and content strategy
  • Traffic and funnel alignment (Pinterest → website or blog)
  • Performance analysis and strategic recommendations
  • Coaching and consulting for long-term Pinterest success

A Strategist is the person you hire when you want a custom plan designed around your business goals, whether that strategy is implemented by you, a VA, a manager, or the Strategist themselves.

How They Work Together

Think of these three roles as layers of expertise that build on one another.

As with any service-based role, responsibilities at each level will vary depending on the scope of engagement outlined in the contract. Regardless of title, all Pinterest roles should maintain brand consistency across pin designs, messaging, and visuals. This is foundational to building trust, recognition, and long-term performance on Pinterest.

Role Focus Key Strength Best For
Pinterest VA Execution Consistency Business owners who already have a Pinterest strategy and just need help implementing it
Pinterest Manager Management Growth & Optimization Business owners ready to delegate Pinterest entirely
Pinterest Strategist Direction Strategy & Analytics Business owners seeking a custom Pinterest plan or audit before outsourcing

Each role is valuable—but their impact depends on where you are in your Pinterest journey.

  • If you’re new to Pinterest or unsure what’s working, start with a Strategist.
  • If you already have a plan but need help managing it, hire a Manager.
  • If you have a solid system but need extra hands, bring on a VA.

Final Thoughts

Pinterest success doesn’t happen overnight — but having the right level of support makes all the difference.

Whether you’re outsourcing for the first time or expanding your team, clarity around these roles ensures your business gets exactly what it needs.

And if you’re a freelancer or VA looking to grow your Pinterest career, these distinctions can help you map out your own professional path—from VA to Manager to Strategist.
